Horror conventions and heavy metal have shared real estate for decades, trading in the same fixations on gothic mood, theatrical dread, and midnight cinema. Texas Frightmare Weekend is leaning directly into that overlap for its 2027 gathering, bringing together key members of Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden under a curated banner titled Monsters of Metal.

Representing the earliest days of the genre are bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward, who formed the original rhythm section of Black Sabbath. Half of the band's foundational lineup will be on hand, which feels fitting for a gathering centered on horror. Sabbath famously built their early identity around the gloom and suspense of scary movies, turning that cinematic atmosphere into heavy, distorted music. Instead of seeing them from the floor of a crowded arena, fans at the convention will encounter them through panel sessions, meet and greets, and direct hallway conversations that define convention culture.

Iron Maiden rounds out the rest of the bill with vocalist Bruce Dickinson and retired drummer Nicko. Dickinson remains one of the most identifiable frontmen in heavy music, having spent decades delivering the high register vocals that powered Maiden through their massive, theatrical run in the eighties and beyond. Behind him for the vast majority of that career sat Nicko, who anchored the band until stepping back from active duties. Placing performers from the grim, stripped down start of the seventies alongside figures from the grand spectacle of eighties metal gives the convention a rare cross generational pull.

Events like Texas Frightmare Weekend usually belong to actors, directors, special effects artists, and memorabilia collectors. Setting aside headline space for heavy rock veterans under the Monsters of Metal moniker demonstrates how deeply music is tied into the wider horror community. The connection between heavy amplification and genre cinema runs deep, and treating musicians as central figures in that space makes complete sense.

Because the convention is scheduled for 2027, attendees have plenty of time to sort out their travel plans. Bringing Butler, Ward, Dickinson, and Nicko into the same building away from the standard touring circuit gives metal enthusiasts an unusual way to revisit two cornerstone catalogs in a setting dedicated entirely to the macabre.
