Liam Gallagher has shut down any possibility of Fontaines D.C. opening for Oasis when the band returns to stadiums in 2027. When asked by a fan on social media why the Dublin band were not being considered for a support slot on the upcoming dates, Gallagher made his feelings obvious. He told the questioner that the quintet are not good enough, adding that they simply do not have any tunes.
The blunt dismissal puts an end to fan speculation about whether the two acts might share a bill, but the friction between them reaches back to the initial Oasis reunion announcement in 2024. At that time, members of Fontaines D.C. openly questioned the renewed appetite for nineties nostalgia. Guitarist Carlos O'Connell stated plainly that he could not really give a shit about the reunion. Bassist Conor Deegan III expanded on that thought, expressing frustration with a broader music culture that he believes is stuck looking backward. Deegan argued that modern culture often finds itself trapped in past decades, creating an endless nostalgic loop that stops musicians from generating original work. He noted that while Fontaines D.C. were recording their album Romance, the band deliberately tried to look forward and create something fresh, which made the return of Oasis feel like an unwelcome distraction.
Frontman Grian Chatten tried to cool temperatures shortly after, stating publicly that he loved Oasis and confirming that his bandmates did not speak for him. Gallagher was not swayed. Ahead of the 2025 concerts, he took aim at Fontaines D.C. online, mocking their clothes by claiming they dressed worse than road crew and dismissing them as an inferior version of EMF.
The Live '27 tour that Gallagher is guarding so fiercely was officially announced on September 14, following months of speculation. Noel Gallagher decided to keep the reunion moving after the group walked off stage at Wembley for their second London date in July 2025, asking why they should pack it in when they were enjoying themselves so much. Public interest remained high, and all 42 dates sold out completely. The itinerary includes eleven nights at Manchester's Etihad Stadium, six shows at Knebworth, five evenings at Celtic Park in Glasgow, and two dates at Slane Castle, alongside stops across mainland Europe and North America. Noel has insisted the 2027 concerts will eclipse the 2025 performances because the band members will feel far more relaxed on stage. As it stands, former Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft is the only confirmed opening act for the entire run, reprising the role he carried out during the 2025 UK schedule.
Fontaines D.C. have not engaged with Gallagher's latest comments, having plenty of other commitments to occupy their attention. The group released their latest album Dopamine Chamber on October 16, introducing the songs one night earlier at an intimate London show at the Roundhouse. Chatten spoke candidly during that gig about enduring a very tough year, acknowledging the June death of the band's manager Trevor Dietz before playing Favourite from their 2023 record Romance. The band spent this week at Alexandra Palace filming an appearance for Later with Jools Holland, with the performance scheduled to air next month.
The divide between the two camps highlights a familiar friction in modern rock, separating arena veterans riding massive waves of catalog adoration from younger musicians trying to define their own path. Fontaines D.C. have demonstrated no interest in flattering Britpop history, and Liam Gallagher clearly feels no obligation to welcome skeptics into his stadium celebrations.
