Gunnersbury Park will host the capital debut of Rock N Roll Circus in July 2027, bringing a combination of live music and big-top performance art to west London. Spanning four days from July 22 to July 25, the gathering has set Camden ska staples Madness in place as its headline act for Saturday, July 24. Organisers have confirmed that the date will serve as the group's only outdoor concert in London across the entire summer season.
The supporting bill for the Saturday programme assembles a varied cross-section of roots, dub, and street rhythm. Madness will be joined at Gunnersbury Park by New Zealand soul and dub collective Fat Freddy's Drop, long-standing Jamaican reggae champions The Wailers, London singer Hollie Cook, and the Black Country duo Big Special. Further headliners and day-by-day billings for the remaining dates of the four-day event will be announced later.
Frontman Suggs addressed the core following directly upon the announcement, issuing a call for all Madheads and madhatters to assemble in the open air, urging crowds to turn up with friends and family to dance in the park. The staging fits comfortably into the visual flair and music-hall humour the band has traded on for decades. Speaking previously about the production behind their Hit Parade tour, Suggs noted that the band continually dreams up quirky visual concepts, comparing the experience to an old-fashioned pop showcase from the sixties. While audiences inevitably arrive wanting to sing through the catalogue, he explained that the group takes genuine pleasure in introducing theatrical elements and interactive routines into their live appearances.
Rock N Roll Circus launched in 2022, distinguishing itself from typical outdoor weekenders by placing circus performers directly alongside concert stages. Aerialists, fire performers, and acrobats share space with the crowds, framed by an extensive selection of food and drink stalls. London will become the third regular stop on the event's calendar, joining established runs at Earlham Park in Norwich and the Don Valley Bowl in Sheffield. Both regional editions are scheduled to return in late August 2027, with Norwich running from August 19 to 22 and Sheffield following from August 26 to 29. The artist rosters for those 2027 regional weekends have not yet been announced.
Earlier editions give a clear picture of the musical territory the event typically explores. Norwich has previously hosted sets by James, The Streets, The Kooks, and a closing appearance by Madness, with additional sets from Ocean Colour Scene, The Selecter, The Vaccines, and The Fratellis. That particular weekend also featured a guest appearance from Cruz Beckham on guitar with The Kooks. In Sheffield, four-day bills have been topped by Richard Ashcroft, Wunderhorse, The Streets, and The Kooks, with support from Babyshambles, Baxter Dury, English Teacher, Fat Dog, Embrace, Cast, and Miles Kane.
The Gunnersbury Park booking lands during a busy period of archival activity for Madness. Take It Or Leave It, their semi-autobiographical 1981 cinema feature, has received a 4K restoration from the British Film Institute and returns to cinema screens in October. That will be followed in November by the release of the Hit Parade 7-inch Singles Collection 1979-1986 box set, gathering the run of 45s that defined their initial breakthrough period.
Tickets for the Saturday date at Gunnersbury Park will be released in three phases. A pre-sale for local residents opens on Tuesday, September 29, followed by a general pre-sale on Wednesday, September 30. Remaining tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday, October 2.
