Few bands have spent as much time warning audiences about technological dominion as Muse. Across albums such as Drones and Simulation Theory, Matt Bellamy built arena spectacles out of warnings about automated control, surveillance systems, and algorithmic supremacy. When the Devon trio quietly surrendered their long-held @Muse handle on Instagram and X earlier this year, adopting @Musetheband instead, their fanbase was quick to spot the switch. Speculation spread across community forums, accompanied by plenty of amusement that the group had seemingly stepped aside for a software program bearing their name.
The company on the other end of the transaction was Meta, which had chosen the Muse moniker for its new artificial intelligence assistant. Rather than an aggressive corporate seizure, Bellamy recently explained that the transition came about through direct negotiation. Speaking on iHeartRadio, the singer revealed that Mark Zuckerberg personally invited him to discuss the naming overlap. During their discussions, the Meta founder gave Bellamy early access to a beta build of the system ahead of its official release. Bellamy found the tech executive alright and not too bad to deal with, and the two parties quickly found common ground.
The arrangement hinged on clear trademark boundaries. Meta wanted the name for its digital tool, while Bellamy wanted to protect the band's core operations. Under the terms of their agreement, the tech conglomerate committed to staying away from music releases and branded merchandise. The boundaries dictate that Bellamy is prohibited from developing a software platform called Muse AI, but he retains the right to manufacture and sell physical apparel like Muse AI shirts. By keeping musical output and physical goods protected, the band avoided legal friction while letting the digital assistant take over the vacant social handles.
The software that prompted the reshuffle went live for users in the United States this week. Unlike the terrifying mechanical forces that populate Muse concept records, Meta's assistant handles mundane administrative routines. It is built to organize schedules, compose replies to emails, and translate broad long-term intentions into concrete steps. The tool focuses on workplace productivity rather than world domination, turning the name into a digital office clerk.
With the online rebranding completed, the Teignmouth group have shifted their attention back to touring and recording. Muse recently released their latest album, The Wow! Signal, a record written during a destabilizing period in Bellamy's personal life after his separation from his wife. Working through that turmoil in the studio helped the songwriter regain his footing, reminding him that writing music remains an absolute necessity for him.
The band are currently assembling a major stage production to support the record. Reflecting on the guitar rock landscape of the 2000s while continuing to invest in elaborate live theatricality, Bellamy noted that the group are building a spaceship for their forthcoming UK and European tour. The arena schedule brings them to Manchester for back to back shows at Co-op Live on November 12 and November 13, followed by a pair of nights at London's O2 arena on November 15 and November 16. After years of writing songs about mechanical futures, Bellamy has managed to strike a bargain with one, keeping his band on the road and his merchandise intact.
