Masterclass: Music Publishing 101, will be covering the basics of music publishing and master recording royalties, synchronization licenses, performance royalties, online streaming and more. Shindigmusic spoke with I’ll Fly Away Foundation co-founder, Kevin Bernier, who had this to say about the event,
“Music Publishing is the cornerstone of the music business. Many songwriters do not understand that you can get income from your music in more ways than playing a show or selling a cd. This Masterclass is designed to give you a basic understanding of how publishing works. After all, if you’re not signed to a publishing deal and you write songs, then you are your own publisher.”
The I’ll Fly Away Foundation, founded in 2011 by husband and wife team Betsy Brumley and Kevin Bernier, use the power of music to engage children and improve their lives. Through songwriting, their programs unlock children’s creative potential and help inspire their dreams, as we teach them to believe in themselves and in power of their creativity. They saying goes “it all starts with a song,” and we believe that song can change a life.
The song “I’ll Fly Away” was written and published in 1932 by the late Albert E Brumley. Viewed as one of the most recognized songs in the world, “I’ll Fly Away” has been recorded in excess of 10,000 times over the course of the past 87 years, covered by everyone from Red Foley (1961) and Johnny Cash (2004), to Aretha Franklin (1997) and Kanye West (2004). In 2018, Reba McEntire won a GRAMMY Award for her rendition.
Masterclass: Music Publishing 101 is set for Tuesday, April 2 at 6:30pm at the Teen Action & Support Center (TASC) in Springdale, Arkansas. Tickets are $25 and available here.
