Fort Smith’s newest music venue, Harry’s Downtown, has steadily hosted exceptional local, regional, and national rock, jazz, singer/songwriter, soul, funk, and jam acts on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights since opening in August. Harry’s is located on Garrison Ave in the same location as the former Webby D’s and more recently, the short-lived, Wishbone’s Music Joint. The atmosphere is classy, yet relaxed with friendly, music-loving staff and patrons. It is non-smoking (unlike many other bars in Fort Smith), and has a patio, great drink selections, and a limited food menu. Harry’s Downtown owner, Jeff Gosey, a Fort Smith tastemaker, also owns AJ’s Oyster House and started the Peacemaker Music Fest.

If you have slept on Harry’s Downtown thus far, this weekend is the time to make the trip. This weekends line-up features Cutthroat Trout on Thursday, and two of Tulsa’s premier musical acts, Henna Roso on Friday and Combsy on Saturday. Though seeing the Cutthroat Trout show will be a first for me, I haven’t stopped gushing about how thrilled I am about seeing two of my favorites, Henna Roso and Combsy, live in Fort Smith!

Cutthroat Trout (Van Buren, AR) is a self-described gypsy jazz trio kicking things off at at 8pm Thursday with a $5 cover.

Henna Roso (Tulsa, OK) is a funky, jazz-fusion music collective who is not only awe-inspiring musically, but also philanthropically. In addition to hosting food drives at every show, they donate ten percent of their revenue to fighting hunger. They ask that you bring ten non-perishable food items to donate to local food pantries. Catch the soulful and soul-warming Henna Roso Friday at 9pm with a $5 cover.

Combsy, led by Chris Combs (composer and multi-instrumentalist) of the legendary Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, is a progressive rock and jazz fusion group with rotating members. Their debut, eponymous album was released in October last year and, not to be hyperbolic, is a moody and circuitous masterpiece. Combsy’s live performances have left me mystified, ruminative, and eager for more. The show starts at 9pm Saturday with a $5 cover.
