Vocal cord damage has a way of stopping a rock band permanently, especially when three silent years follow the diagnosis. When Steven Tyler suffered a serious larynx injury that brought Aerosmith's touring schedule to a sudden halt, assumptions naturally circulated that the Boston group had finished their run for good. Those assumptions were answered directly at the Hollywood Bowl on October 29 and November 1, where the band assembled an extensive cast of friends and peers for a pair of concerts billed as California, Dream On: Aerosmith and Friends.

The two concerts functioned less like an ordinary tour stop and more like a live retrospective. Comedian and actor Bill Burr hosted both evenings, sparking debate right away during the opening performance by informing the audience that they were watching the final two concerts in Aerosmith history. Tyler dismissed that claim the following night. Taking the microphone, he asked the crowd if Burr honestly believed anyone could get rid of the group, adding that when the end of the world arrives, the only survivors will be cockroaches, Aerosmith, and Burr.

Rather than jumping straight to the headliners, each evening opened with a procession of admirers tackling the band's catalog. The first night featured tribute performances from Eric Church, Heart, Billy Idol, Sammy Hagar, and Godsmack vocalist Sully Erna, with Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt providing instrumental support. The Black Crowes delivered a selection of four Aerosmith tracks, while Guns N' Roses handled direct support duties with renditions of Nobody's Fault, Last Child, and Seasons of Wither.

Aerosmith's own appearance on the opening night began with a visual nod to their past. The band was introduced by the singer's daughter Liv Tyler and actor Alicia Silverstone, who had co-starred thirty years earlier in the 1994 music video for Crazy. For the performance itself, Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry were joined by Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, who stepped behind the drum kit for the majority of the six song set. Grohl powered the group through Toys in the Attic, Back in the Saddle, Sweet Emotion, The Train Kept A Rollin, and Dream On. Johnny Depp made an unbilled appearance on guitar during The Train Kept A Rollin, before original drummer Joey Kramer took his place behind the drums to close out the night with Walk This Way.

The second evening brought a revised supporting bill. Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello teamed with Halestorm singer Lzzy Hale for performances of Kings and Queens and Round and Round. Alice in Chains members Jerry Cantrell and Mike Inez joined Richie Kotzen to perform Draw the Line along with a second version of Nobody's Fault. Grace Potter, Train singer Pat Monahan, and Heart sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson also made appearances, alongside returning sets from Idol, The Black Crowes, and Guns N' Roses.

Aerosmith changed their own setup for the November 1 finale. Grohl and Depp did not take part, with recent touring drummer John Douglas taking over percussion duties for the set. Along with revisiting their classic material, the band added a performance of The Beatles' Come Together to the setlist.

While these performances represented the band's first unified live appearance in three years, Tyler had stayed busy with outside work. He performed at Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath's final Back to the Beginning show in 2025, later joining Perry and Yungblud for an Osbourne tribute at the 2025 MTV VMAs. Tyler also worked directly with Yungblud on the One More Time EP, a project that spawned a country remix with Lainey Wilson and a Desert Road version featuring Steve Martin. Grohl brought his own momentum to the Hollywood Bowl, having recently supported and performed with AC/DC and joined Bruce Springsteen and Jack Black at Morello's inaugural Power to the People festival.

Whether these two Los Angeles dates remain an isolated reunion or lead to further activity, Tyler's reaction from the stage left little ambiguity about who controls the narrative. As long as the band can still command a room of that size, any final word on their future will come from them alone.
