A sudden accident during a late night festival set in Louisville has resulted in catastrophic injuries for a concertgoer. Jamie Ulshoffer was attending Louder Than Life to watch local hardcore band Knocked Loose when an individual who had climbed into an overhead tree branch fell directly onto her. The impact severed her spinal cord, leaving her paralysed from the waist down.
The incident occurred on Friday, September 18, during the four day event staged at the Kentucky Exposition Center. The weekend featured headline sets from Tool, Iron Maiden, Limp Bizkit, and My Chemical Romance, but the schedule on Friday ran into immediate complications due to severe weather. Early in the day, festival organizers temporarily evacuated the site for around two hours as storms moved through the region. That weather delay pushed set times back across the grounds, leaving Knocked Loose, who had been brought in as a surprise hometown addition, taking the tented Impact Stage at 11:05pm.
Ulshoffer had been watching the Oldham County group alongside her husband, Conor. The couple positioned themselves toward the back right corner of the tent structure, close to a cluster of four trees. Conor later described turning around to see his wife on the ground, before surrounding attendees told him that someone had fallen directly from the branches above. Authorities later confirmed that an overhead tree limb had snapped under the climber's weight, sending him crashing down into the crowd below.
Ulshoffer was rushed from the festival grounds to UofL Hospital, where medical staff admitted her to the intensive care unit. Speaking from the hospital about her condition, she explained that she has lost sensation in her feet and is unable to handle everyday activities she once took for granted, such as playing with her children. While she noted that climbing the tree was a senseless decision, particularly given how wet the grounds and trees were after the afternoon downpour, she stated that she feels no hatred toward the individual and has chosen to forgive him.
Legal authorities and event organizers addressed the aftermath early the following week. On Tuesday, September 22, the Louisville police confirmed they would not be pursuing a criminal investigation, classifying the occurrence as a civil matter instead. Danny Wimmer Presents, the promoter behind the festival, issued a brief statement noting that patient privacy regulations prevented them from sharing or commenting on specific details concerning on site medical emergencies. To help manage the considerable costs of ongoing rehabilitation and hospital care, Ulshoffer's family launched a GoFundMe campaign, which quickly raised more than $13,000 toward its $22,000 goal.
The late set was intended to be a notable homecoming performance for Knocked Loose during an especially visible period for the band. Earlier in the year, the group teamed with rapper Denzel Curry on the track Hive Mind, premiering the collaboration live during an unannounced gig at a Brooklyn skatepark in July.
