Josh Tillman is not taking much time away from the studio or the stage. Instead of slowing down after two years of steady touring, he has released his third standalone track of 2026, titled The X-panded Universe. The single arrives alongside the announcement of an eight-date December tour through the western United States, where he will be joined by Damien Jurado. It follows two earlier releases from this year, The Payoff and The Old Law, a song that had previously circulated under the working title God's Trash.
Tillman wrote the new track alone, handling production alongside Drew Erickson, who also arranged the music. The piece starts with notable restraint, leaning on a skeletal rhythm and stripped-down instrumentation that keeps Tillman's vocal upfront and uncluttered. As the arrangement develops, Erickson's string parts begin to filter into the mix, eventually swelling into dense, full orchestral figures that match the cinematic scope of the writing.
Lyrically, Tillman draws heavily from the conventions of comic books and speculative fiction, using genre tropes to examine ordinary human vulnerability. The opening verse introduces Dr Valence, an oracle confined to a chair, who is taken aback to discover that the weapon he was sent to retrieve is an ordinary young woman. Tillman expands the canvas upstate, introducing Colossus alongside a Texas candy heiress who sits on a padded floor between doses of medication.
In the middle of the track, Tillman borrows the language of multi-issue comic crossovers to reflect on narrative and faith. He reports that the liberation front remains eight days away on foot, remarking that God is only as good as the villains he invents. The song then wanders through alternate timelines where heroes do not exist and touches on an inter-dimensional virus, yet Tillman balances the surreal imagery with the grounded admission that human love is real. By the climax, the arrangement gives way to a wide, repetitive refrain where Tillman insists that everyone gets saved, providing an unexpectedly warm resolution to the dense narrative threads spun earlier in the song.
The newly announced winter tour will take Tillman through the western part of the country throughout December, with Jurado handling opening duties on all eight dates. The itinerary opens on December 9 at the Boulder Theatre in Colorado, moving to Washington's in Fort Collins the following evening on December 10. From there, the tour travels to The Lensic Center For The Arts in Santa Fe on December 12, then stops at La Rosa in Tucson on December 13.
Four California dates close out the run. Tillman and Jurado will perform at the Uptown Theater in Napa on December 15, followed by an appearance at the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley on December 16. The winter schedule concludes with back-to-back nights at the Sunset Cultural Center in Carmel-by-the-Sea on December 18 and 19. Prior to that December trek, Tillman is set to play a sold-out headline date at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles on October 6. Tickets for the winter dates will be offered through a Ticketmaster pre-sale, with general sales opening at 10am on Friday, October 2.
These upcoming winter performances extend an intense period of touring. Tillman spent his summer and autumn traveling across the United States and Canada, which followed a June European tour featuring his Evening With Father John Misty format at London's O2 Shepherds Bush Empire and an appearance at Glastonbury in 2025. Coming after the late 2024 arrival of his sixth studio album, Mahashmashana, this run of independent singles indicates that Tillman is using his time between major record cycles to test ambitious narrative concepts while maintaining a regular presence on the road.
