On October 30, Harry Styles took the stage at Madison Square Garden for the opening night of this year's two-part Harryween celebration. Rather than sticking entirely to pop culture icons outside himself, he chose to dress as the teenager who stepped into an arena audition room fourteen years ago.

The evening did not start with teenage memories, though. Styles originally stepped out under the arena lights disguised as Elvis Presley, wearing a white jumpsuit, cape, and gold sunglasses. His musicians and dancers joined in on the retrospective spirit, turning up in outfits modeled after his own past appearances at the Met Gala, the Grammys, and Coachella. Later in the set, he swapped the rhinestone Presley wardrobe for an exact replica of the clothes he wore as a 16-year-old on The X Factor in 2010. Facing the packed New York crowd, he sang Stevie Wonder's 1976 standard 'Isn't She Lovely', the performance that persuaded Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger, and Louis Walsh to keep him in the competition. Between lines, he resurrected his original on-camera quote with deadpan delivery, telling the room, "I work in a bakery."

That line was entirely literal when he said it back in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, balancing part-time shifts behind the counter with an audition for television. When the broadcast originally aired, viewers only saw him sing Wonder's melody without accompaniment. An unedited archival clip published in 2022, however, revealed that he started the tryout with Train's 'Hey, Soul Sister'. Cowell stopped the song almost immediately, questioning whether the backing track was doing his vocals any favors, and asked for an unassisted attempt instead. The impromptu shift to Wonder earned him a ticket to the next stage, setting in motion the formation of One Direction alongside Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and the late Liam Payne.

Costume choices and surprise cover versions have been central to these autumn shows since Styles inaugurated Harryween at Madison Square Garden in 2021. That first year found him dressed as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, performing 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' while his band took on the film's supporting characters, followed the next evening by a clown costume and a run through Britney Spears' 'Toxic'. A 2022 edition in Los Angeles featured him as Danny Zuko from Grease, tackling Olivia Newton-John's 'Hopelessly Devoted To You'. Turning the costume concept back onto his own teenage self brought an affectionate, self-aware touch to the custom.

The performance landed on the twenty-ninth night of a thirty-show residency at the venue, which kicked off in August as part of his Together, Together world tour. The extended run has allowed space for deep cuts alongside holiday gimmicks. Earlier in the week, he revived 'Ever Since New York' for the first time in four years, and recently debuted an unreleased piece titled 'What Is Enough' as a tribute to Payne.

The New York residency finishes on October 31, concluding the thirty-date stretch before the tour heads to Australia for shows in Melbourne and Sydney across November and December. With additional dates already booked through 2027, including nights at Wembley Stadium, the tour continues in support of his fourth studio album, Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, which came out in March. Standing in the middle of Madison Square Garden in clothes copied from his teenage wardrobe, he gave the audience an affectionate reminder of how unusual his trajectory has been since leaving the bakery floor.
