The criminal case against the Florida woman accused of opening fire on the Los Angeles residence of Robyn Fenty and Rakim Mayers is set to move forward. Ivanna Lisette Ortiz has been formally ruled mentally competent to stand trial, ending a pause that had kept the legal proceedings on hold for over four months. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maria Cavalluzzi issued the decision on September 29 after reviewing medical findings regarding Ortiz, though the court decided to keep the underlying psychiatric records confidential and under seal.
The charges in the case trace back to the afternoon of March 8, when a barrage of gunfire rattled the estate shared by Fenty and Mayers, who perform as Rihanna and A$AP Rocky. At around 13:15 local time, an attacker discharged a semiautomatic rifle toward the property. Ortiz entered a plea of not guilty to the formal charges, which include attempted murder, ten separate counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and three counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling or vehicle. If jurors eventually return guilty verdicts on those counts, Ortiz could face a maximum penalty of life in prison.
The ten assault charges reflect the wide circle of individuals who were on the grounds and in the surrounding area when the weapon was fired. According to the criminal complaint, those named as victims include Fenty and Mayers, along with their three young children and Fenty's mother, Monica. The list also accounts for two staff members who were working at the residence that afternoon, as well as two people who were inside a neighboring home while the bullets flew. The three shooting charges line up with the specific buildings and structures struck by gunfire, namely Rihanna's main house, an adjacent neighboring residence, and an Airstream trailer located on the property grounds.
A police report filed after the shooting provides a detailed look at how narrow the escape was for the artists. Fenty was inside the Airstream trailer on the property when she suddenly heard what sounded like ten distinct, heavy impacts clanging against metal. When she looked out through the glass to investigate the source of the noise, she realized that bullets from a rifle were striking the outer shell of the trailer. Fresh bullet holes had pierced the front windshield, directly in the spot where she had been standing only moments before.
Reacting quickly to the threat, Fenty reached for Mayers, who was still in bed inside the trailer. She pulled him awake, warned him that someone was shooting at them, and guided both of them flat onto the floor to stay out of the line of fire. Mayers later told responding police officers that he woke up specifically to his partner's urgent warning about the active gunfire. Despite the intensity of the attack and the number of rounds fired, neither artist was hurt, and nobody else present on the grounds suffered physical injuries.
Investigators were able to trace Ortiz shortly after the incident. Officers located her Tesla parked in the lot of a shopping center roughly eight miles from the estate, where she was taken into custody without further incident.
With the competency review concluded and the court clearing the case for trial, the matter will now proceed through the California justice system. In the meantime, the household has begun returning to its usual creative routines following the initial shock and the immediate security concerns. Mayers recently revealed that Rihanna has returned to work in the recording studio, resuming her creative schedule as prosecutors prepare to bring the March attack to court.
